From the time cloud computing was introduced to the world to today, the technology has evolved enormously and seen waves of innovations, changing the way we work, store information, interact, and so much more. So, what does the next wave of cloud computing innovation and transformation have in store for the world?
Find out in this blog.
This was discussed extensively at the recent Gartner IT Infrastructure, Operations, and Cloud Strategies Conference. According to Gartner, the next wave of cloud computing will see even more complicated workloads migrated over. It will also see a host of new options being offered to the users. Even today, a large chunk of enterprises see the cloud as a means to offer additional capacity to their customers, it is expected that by 2028, cloud computing will become an absolute necessity for everyone.
This change, experts believe, will also be driven by the conversion or the rewriting of legacy applications, a lot of which are still functioning on mainframes or legacy mid-range systems. Converting or rewriting them, as may be feasible, would be essential to make them for the age of cloud computing. Gartner also shared at the conference that these efforts to bring about the modernization of systems would lead to about 70% of the tech workloads running in a cloud environment. Right now, that number stands at 25%. They also shared that by 2028, cloud computing wouldn’t be something that helps organizations be competitive. Instead, it will be essential for the survival of the organization.
Does this mean that all applications and systems need to be migrated to public cloud data centers? Not always. Embracing the cloud model could also mean imposing the typical cloud attributes on the legacy workloads, even if they continue to remain in the corporate data centers. So, one could impose concepts that are usually involved when working on the cloud such as automation, self-service, consumption-based usage, etc. on the legacy workloads too.
If we look at the larger picture, the interest in cloud has been spiking for a very long time now. By 2028, 50% of all enterprises are expected to use industry cloud platforms to accelerate their business initiatives.
With so much thrust on embracing the cloud, it is also obvious that there will be more options to choose from coming up. While the big players will continue to hold strategically important positions in the market, it is expected that new players in the cloud platforms space offering creative and innovative new features for users will emerge. This will cause the cloud ecosystem to expand with a lot more vendors than the market currently has. While this happens, we believe that operational issues such as cloud governance will continue to remain super important for organizations. Cloud governance will help organizations ensure that they are using the cloud optimally in a way that aligns properly with the business requirements, goals, and objectives. It would also help protect organizations from security risks & compliance issues, something that is as we are seeing, becoming increasingly important. Additionally, cloud governance plays a critical role in optimizing costs and improving resource utilization.
With time, people are also realizing that using the cloud could be a more secure option for organizations compared to traditional data centers. Gartner shares that in the next five years, over 50% of multinational enterprises will have digital sovereignty strategies. This number currently stands at less than 10%!
What is digital sovereignty? Digital sovereignty, according to Gartner, is a provision of cloud services within a jurisdiction meeting data residency requirements along with technology & operational autonomy. Digital sovereignty aims to ensure that the data and infrastructure remain free from control by external jurisdictions and are protected from access by foreign entities including foreign governments. But to leap to such a strategic level, one would first have to audit the systems they already have in-house. The best way to do this was to go step by step to look at the entire application portfolio and evaluate each one individually to decide what to do with them.
Another key element in stepping up to the cloud and being successful is staffing. The importance of getting the right people with the right skills who have skills and knowledge to help your organization align your cloud and digital transformation initiatives with business goals and objectives can’t be stressed enough. It would be immensely beneficial to have a parallel organization structure that works on the cloud initiatives along with teams who work on the legacy systems. This way, you can have the people with the right skills and experience working on the initiatives that they are trained to work with. This usually works out better than having one team and expecting them to be skilled and equipped to deal with everything.
Eventually, this would boil down to the costs. Organizations can be super enthusiastic about migrating to the cloud but keeping costs in check is always a critical factor. Overspending on the cloud is not recommended or ideal for anyone. However, experts opine that costs shouldn’t be the only factor driving cloud adoption and migration. Instead, let the key drivers be agility, flexibility, and innovation, and then find an option that works best cost-wise while helping you achieve your goals & objectives.
